MASSACHUSETTS – A Northborough woman has filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination against a doctor. The complaint alleges that the victim was sexually harassed by a doctor during the time the two worked at a physicians practice affiliated with MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham.
The victim, Lorri Craig, claims that Dr. Kiran Raju made explicit sexual comments while in the office where they were working for MetroWest Physician Services as well as in two phone calls dated in February.
Craig also alleges that the practice’s office manager, Mary McCarthy, was involved in one of the phone calls, and made vulgar remarks about Craig’s possible sex life.
The complaint, which was filed last month, also contains a copy of an e-mail from McCarthy in which she apologizes to Craig for the phone conversation.
In addition, Craig, who worked for the s practice from November to May, alleges that Scott Disch, director of MetroWest Physician Services, denied her an office manager’s job for which she had already been hired, as a form of retaliation against her for complaining about the sexual harassment incidents.
According to Craig, she reported the harassment to Disch, as well as to the Human Resources Department at MetroWest Medical Center. “We understand the allegations of the complaint that has been filed, and we are conducting an internal investigation,’’ said Dennis Irish, a spokesman for the center. “We look forward to the results of the MCAD investigation and will take whatever action may be appropriate at that time.’’
Disch did not comment on the allegations, except to say: “HR will probably be commenting at a further point, within a week,’’ he said. Dr. Raju and McCarthy were not able to be reached for comment. Craig admits to voluntarily resigning from her position because of the intolerable work environment.
“The conduct of Dr. Raju and Ms. McCarthy was inappropriate and vulgar and left me feeling embarrassed and humiliated,’’ said Craig in her affidavit.
Sexual harassmnet can range from a number of mild lewd comments that are not directed at any person in particular, to serous physical actions such as rape. Regardless of the way the behaviors manifest, any form of sexual harassment is completely unacceptable. Sexual harassment not only creates a hostile work environment, but can severely affect the victim for the rest of their lives. If you or someone you know has been the victim in a sexual harassment case, seek the help of a leading sexual harassment lawyer immediately to ensure the perpetrator is stopped.
All sexual harassment victims have the right to come forward, unfortunately though, not many do. Many victims feel embarrassed to explain what happened or are afraid that if they speak up, the harasser will make matters worse for them. In reality, doing nothing almost guarantees that the behaviors will continue, get worse or that the perpetrator will take a new victim. All victims have rights and are protected against sexual harassment, so don’t be afraid to speak up to a sexual harassment attorney to ensure the harasser is brought to justice.
Sexual harassment lawyers will not only put a stop to the unwanted sexual behaviors, but will ensure that they do not happen again. Whether you or someone you know was the target of explicit comments, was asked to perform sexual favors in exchange for a raise or promotion, or was physically attacked, sexual harassment attorneys can help ensure that all victims’ rights are upheld.
