Posted in TORONTO, Canada – The Toronto police department is facing incriminating sexual harassment allegations that could cost the force over a million dollars.
A group of protestors is suing the Toronto police for $1.4 million for wrongful arrest, illegal detention and sexual assault.
Seven protestors were arrested at a G20 summit in 2010 after accused the police of discriminating against people with black clothing or backpacks, as well as women with hairy legs.
The group claims that they were arrested on June 27, 2010 without reason, were confined in a detention center for over a day and were also sexually assaulted.
One of the plaintiffs, Alicia Ridge, alleges she was sexually abused during a strip search from male officers.
“It was a fairly pathetic rendition of a search in that it was just a quick run of a hand up the leg followed by a swift ass grab. And there were lots of sexualized comments that went along with it,” said Ridge.
The group was later released without charges, and turned to lawyer Davin Charney for help. According to Charney, the Toronto police have a “reckless disregard for people’s fundamental rights.”
